I have specialized training in research-based treatments to assist those
with specific emotional or psychological concerns. Some mental health problems,
such as anxiety disorders and OCD, are the most treatable when specialized
treatment methods are used. For example, when assisting clients to overcome
anxiety I utilize cognitive behavioral therapy with an emphasis on exposure
based interventions. I have completed specialized OCD training with the
Behavior Therapy Training Institute which is affiliated with the
International OCD Foundation.
In addition to focusing on helping others with anxiety problems and OCD, I
have a special interest in grief/trauma and working with young adults.
Whether it is job relocation, end of a relationship, or death of a loved
one, we have all experienced some type of grief in our lives. Grief
counseling can help with coping through the many challenges associated with
the loss and adjusting to the new reality of life. As a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, I'm able to assist with longer term reactions to trauma such as unpredictable emotions (anger, guilt, irritability), physical symptoms (headaches or nausea), flashbacks, and feeling disconnected.
Often times young adults have problems managing the transition from
adolescence to adulthood. I enjoy working with this population to help
them to learn to take responsibility for their problems, learn new coping
skills, and build greater confidence in moving toward functioning
adulthood.
I have been a counselor in private practice since 2004. My experience in
the Houston area includes working as an inpatient therapist for children,
adolescents, and adults in local psychiatric hospitals such as Kingwood
Pines Hospital and Cypress Creek Hospital. Before my transition into
private practice, I was a director of an adult psychiatric day program and
case manager of a Houston based foster care agency.
I received my Masters of Education in Counseling from the University of St.
Thomas located in Houston, Texas. I completed my internship at
Bo's Place
, a grief center in Houston. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in
Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin.
